Trade has always been central to Australia’s prosperity. But it must work for Australians, not against them.

The Nationals back trade. It helps our farmers, miners and regional businesses get a fair price for what they produce. But trade must be fair. It must be reciprocal. And it must be in Australia’s national interest. If other countries protect their industries, subsidise their producers or shut out our exports, we have every right to stand up for our own.

The Nationals have always stood up for Australia’s wealth producing industries. From the early days of the Country Party, we backed farmers and regional exporters. We helped them get better access to markets. We made sure Australian industries were not left exposed to unfair competition. That balance still matters today. Open markets where we can. The strength to act when Australian jobs and industries are on the line.

Australia cannot keep sending jobs offshore. We cannot keep hollowing out our own industries and hope it all works out. We should not just dig it up, ship it out and buy it back at a higher price. If other countries want to protect their industries, Australia has every right to stand up for ours. That means backing Australian manufacturing. Adding value to our resources. Making more things here again.

The Nationals will always back Australian exporters to break into new markets. We will always stand up for Australian industries when other countries try to take advantage. That means protecting our jobs. Supporting regional communities. Making sure Australia remains a strong, self reliant trading nation.
